Join us on a whirlwind adventure through the cinematic and televised landscapes of Doctor Who and Star Wars with Harbo Wholmes aka Harvey, our esteemed guest and Doctor Who connoisseur. Together, we embark on an exploration of these timeless franchises as they make bold leaps into new realms—Doctor Who's transformative journey under co-production, and the reception of the Fallout adaptation for Amazon Prime. Harvey and I share a passion for preserving the essence of these narratives while welcoming fresh faces and stories to captivate new generations of fans.

The heart of our discussion beats in sync with the Doctor Who fandom, where the fervor for Ncuti Gatwa's upcoming role as the Doctor is palpable. We traverse the fine line between sharing exhilarating developments and keeping the enchantment under wraps—a tightrope walked by showrunners and fans alike. As we reminisce about our own connections to the series, we dissect the impact of major plot twists, like the Timeless Child revelation, and celebrate the "celebrity historical" episodes that breathe new life into the show's storied tradition.

Our TARDIS then sets course for the future, contemplating the uncharted potential of Doctor Who's storytelling and the legacy of regeneration. We engage in a spirited debate on the effects of casting high-profile actors in iconic roles, pondering the presence they bring to the screen. As Harvey shares his insights, we close with a nod to shows that share the innovative spirit of Doctor Who, recommending Inside No. 9 for those seeking another dimension of clever, episodic tales. So, latch onto your sonic screwdriver—this is one episode that will transport you to the furthest reaches of fandom and beyond.

Joining me this week is the perceptive and quick-witted Aprille, editorial head of Off Colour, and a critic with a fresh viewpoint on everything from horror flicks to the ethical dilemmas in biopics. We kick off with a vibrant chat about the much-anticipated Bob Marley 'One Love' biopic. April, a comic book aficionado, also sheds light on the shakeup surrounding 'X-Men '97' and the wider issues in the Marvel Universe. But it's not just superheroes and reggae legends; we get real about the portrayal of icons, discussing the casting choices that make or break a biopic's authenticity.

Our discourse takes a candid turn as we scrutinize the cultural imprint of biopics on society. Do these films simply serve as a fast track to awards? We're dissecting the motivations behind actors stepping into the shoes of famous figures and questioning whether these narratives do justice to their legacies or merely sanitize complicated histories for mass consumption. From the nuances of Ryan Coogler's new vampire project to the concerns with the way biopics like the Amy Winehouse story might be handled, April and I pull back the curtain on the art of storytelling and its intersection with the celebrities we think we know.

As the conversation winds down, we switch gears to offer up some TV show endorsements that have truly captured our hearts. Hear why "Star Trek Discovery" stands out with its captivating cast and why "Lovesick" might just be the dose of awkward, feel-good comedy you didn't know you needed. If you're chasing a series that delves into the complexities of relationships with humor and grace, "Feel Good" is the one to watch. It's been a thrilling ride this week, and we can't wait for you to join us in unpacking the layers of film, fame, and the stories we tell. Don't forget to keep up with Aprille's insightful work by checking out her social media after the show!

Ever wondered how Hollywood juggles delicate socio-political issues with the glitz and glamour of the silver screen? Join me as we navigate these choppy waters alongside TikTok's insightful movie maven, Alta's Oyster. We'll dissect Sydney Sweeney's bone-chilling performance in "Immaculate," her foray into horror that doubles as a production debut, and lay bare the eeriness of religious devotion entangled with cultural shock. But that's just the first act; our dialogue also probes the surprising stall of "Euphoria" Season 3, speculating on the reasons and ramifications of this unexpected intermission for its cast and fervent fanbase.

Our critique doesn't shy away from the controversies that send ripples across Tinseltown, including the polarized response to Jonathan Glazer's Academy Awards speech addressing Gaza. We grapple with the complex casting of Billy Porter as the iconic James Baldwin, unpacking how this decision resonates with Baldwin's enduring influence. And when we talk horror, we're not just jumping at shadows; we're scrutinizing the genre's depiction of women's agency, the potency of patriarchal narratives, and the subversion of traditional religious iconography in storytelling.

Rolling up the episode, we reflect on the haunting dynamics in "Immaculate," where the protagonist's stark reality clashes with the immutable doctrines of her faith. We tackle the interplay of power and submission within the sacred walls of a convent, and ponder over whether a film like "Immaculate" could redefine horror for a new generation. And lastly, for those hungry for more, we'll leave you with a string of recommendations that promise to scratch that itch for heart-pounding, edge-of-your-seat entertainment. Stay tuned, and let's unravel the complexities of film, feminism, and faith together.

Unveiling the Realities of 'Maid' with TikTok's Big Teezus

Join us this week as we welcome the incredible TikTok sensation, Big Teezus, to shine a light on the poignant Netflix miniseries "Maid" and its unflinching portrayal of domestic violence. Our Media Mania segment kicks off with a celebration of Victoria Monet's Grammy wins, illustrating her rise from a renowned songwriter to a powerhouse artist in her own right. As we navigate the main discussion, we unpack the complexities that victims of abuse face, from cyclical employment and daycare barriers to the broader misconceptions of abuse, all encapsulated in the show's compelling narrative.

Listen in as we delve into the hurdles of balancing parenthood, education, and the quest for independence amid domestic turmoil. Our conversation touches on the protagonist's struggle for normalcy for her child, the dire need for better support systems, and the empowering journey of self-education against the backdrop of caring for a dependent parent. The narrative of "Maid" is a stark reminder of the courage it takes to chase personal aspirations when the odds seem insurmountable.

Finally, we take a detour to recommend other impactful shows and movies, highlighting how "Maid" masterfully tackles family and legal challenges. We discuss the protagonist's determination and the lack of support from figures like her father Hank, weaving in themes of workplace inequality and the power of advocacy. Our discussion also revisits initial hesitations about popular shows, including The Morning Show featuring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, and how they can surprise us with nuanced takes on issues like pay equity. Don't miss out on this conversation with Big Teezus as we explore these themes and much more in our latest episode.

Have you ever sat through a film that left you with more questions than answers? That's the kind of rich, complex, and sometimes frustrating cinematic landscape we're unraveling in our latest episode. We kick things off by revisiting the most impactful conversations from the last year, celebrating the art of storytelling with a nod to the horror genre's empathetic masters like Guillermo del Toro and Mike Flanagan. We don't just bask in their glory; we scrutinize the delicate craft of blending social horror with political commentary, acknowledging successes and where expectations fall short, all while pondering the evolving role creators play in today's politically charged atmosphere.

Transforming from bystanders to critics, we then engage with the contentious topics rocking the film world. From the anticipated 'Priscilla' biopic to the hype around 'The Marvels', we dissect the complex interplay of anticipation and disappointment, touching on 'trailer fishing' and the occasional disconnect between movie trailers and the films they represent. The conversation doesn't stop there; we also dive into the responsibilities of filmmakers when presenting narratives outside their cultural perspective, discussing the impact of authenticity and creative intent in storytelling.

Wrapping up, our episode takes a turn into the ethical quandaries and power dynamics that films like "Tár" boldly address. We examine the narrative through various lenses, contemplating the gendered implications of power and dominance, and ponder the age-old dilemma of art versus the artist. As we break down these intriguing portrayals and their psychological underpinnings, we offer an unfiltered glimpse into the moral complexities that make films not just entertainment, but a reflection of our very humanity. Join us for this thought-provoking journey through the highs and lows of the past year in film.

Navigating the Yuletide Glow: A Deep Dive into Christmas TV Specials with Derek Gayle

Navigating the Yuletide Glow: A Deep Dive into Christmas TV Specials with Derek Gayle

JOIN US ON PATREON: patreon.com/ivebeenmeaningtowatch.
The holiday spirit arrives with a twinkle and a touch of nostalgia as Derek Gale, affectionately known as Dare Bear, joins me for a sleigh ride through the wonderland of Christmas TV specials. From the heartwarming moments of "The Office" to the timey-wimey traditions of "Doctor Who," we unpack the episodes that have us decking the halls and cringing when our favorite shows vanish from streaming services. Remember the time you had to scour the internet for that one "Doctor Who" Christmas special? Yeah, we're not over it either.

As we cozy up with our hot cocoa, we can't help but grumble over what's become of the streaming landscape—ads cluttering our screens, beloved shows being axed, and big budgets splurging on the next explosive blockbuster while gems like 'Shadow and Bone' get the cold shoulder. The conversation ventures into the evolving nature of digital media consumption, provoking thoughts about our yearning for simple, all-in-one platforms without the monopoly drama. Oh, and Netflix's movie selection? We've got a bone to pick there, too.

Wrapping up with bows on top, we steer our chat towards the emotional journeys TV shows take us on, like the raw struggles depicted in the series starring Margaret Qualley. Then, there's the peculiar mix of originals and franchise spin-offs that leave us questioning the strategies of giants like Paramount and Peacock. Before we sign off, Derek shares a sneak peek at the Glitter Jaw Queer Podcast Collective, a must-listen for those intrigued by discussions on everything from media to monster movies. So grab your favorite Santa hat, and let's jingle all the way through this festive podcast episode.

Can a blockbuster superhero flick also double as a heartwarming Christmas movie? Does the departure of a series director signify a potential shift in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's narrative trajectory? Prepare to unearth the answers as we welcome back our esteemed guests, Loretto and Lonnie, for an intellectual feast of lively debates and candid discussions!

We begin by challenging the conventional definitions of Christmas movies, as we passionately advocate for our beloved non-traditional picks. We then shift our focus to the ripple effects of Michael Waldron's involvement in the MCU's Avengers: Kang Dynasty and its anticipated follow-up, Secret Wars. The plot thickens as we navigate the unusual casting decisions for the new Amazon Prime show "Jury Duty" and unravel the implications of Amazon's recent cancellations on future productions.

But that's not all! We don't shy away from tackling the often contentious role of franchises in Hollywood and their impact on the film industry, drawing from the insightful views of renowned director Christopher Nolan. We also unpack the controversial storylines of the Star Wars sequel trilogy as compared to the MCU's treatment of its characters. After the death of the family patriarch and business mogul, Mr Logan, the real power struggle began among his family on who would have a say and whose ideas would be considered right. The end of the ‘Succession’ TV series Season 4 shows that as much as family businesses are often praised for fostering a sense of unity and dedication, they may end up in disharmony, betrayal, and fighting. With time, these businesses may expand and transform into family conglomerates, which resemble more of a monarchy rather than a democratic business structure. Power and decision-making become concentrated within the hands of a few family members, limiting outside perspectives and potentially harming the business.

Join us on part 2 of this series that was on HBO for a while. The show is a peek into the life of the Roy family, who own a massive media company. The family has a lot of fighting, secrets, and drama because they all want to be the boss when the dad, Logan Roy, can't do it anymore. In Part 2, we still have Jordan Simmons. He is an expert in talking about movies and shows. You might have seen his stuff in The Cinema Spot and The DisInsider, and he also hosts The DisInsider's News podcast.

I've Been Meaning to Watch Queen Charlotte w/Joc's Watchlist

JOIN US ON PATREON: patreon.com/ivebeenmeaningtowatch

In this episode of I’ve Been Meaning to Watch That, Jocelyn, AKA Joc’s Watchlist, talks about Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.

"Hi, everyone! I'm Jocelyn, also known as Joc's Watch List on TikTok and Instagram. I talk about TV shows and movies, review them, and give recommendations. I also share a daily TV show guide, so if you're ever running out of things to watch, come follow me!"

First things first: in the Can’t Wait to Watch segment, we talk about the upcoming DC movie, Blue Beetle, in the shadow of recent DC drama. We’re hoping that Blue Beetle will break the trend of DC’s underperforming releases when it comes out in August. We also get into Warner Brothers’ new plan to license HBO original series to Netflix. Is this a bad idea? What does it mean for the HBO-exclusive series?

Is Netflix’s “One Home Per Account” plan worth it? Is it time to cancel our subscriptions? Which streaming platform should we pick? Does Peacock offer good value?

Hear our thoughts on Atlanta Housewives, our predictions for the upcoming Challengers movie after watching the trailer, the next seasons of Euphoria, our beef with HBO’s The Idol, and other shows that we enjoyed – including The Sex Lives of College Girls, Never Have I Ever, Mr. Malcolm’s List, and we reminisce about old shows.

Then, we get into the main topic of the show: Queen Charlotte. How many episodes should it have had? We’re not too surprised at the show’s success, because, let’s be honest, it’s Shonda Rhimes, and the actors were also incredible. We’re glad that Bridgerton is introducing black characters into period dramas, but should Julia Quinn be making money from the diversity in the shows?

We look at how Queen Charlotte’s priorities have changed as she aged, we try to piece together what the other characters’ lives would’ve looked like if the show had been longer, and we try to imagine Queen Charlotte’s origin story.

In the final segment, Watchlist, we go through the shows that we’re excited about and our recommendations.

Constantine's movie, which initially aired in 2005 alongside the popular Supernatural show, continues to be a compelling topic for discussion. What adds to its intrigue is the recent revival of the franchise. In September 2022, the news broke that Constantine 2 was officially in development, sparking excitement among fans and reigniting interest in the original film. This raises the question of whether Constantine still holds up as an enjoyable watch, even after more than a decade since its release.

I've Been Meaning To Watch Tar with Aria The Critical Lesbian

I've Been Meaning To Watch Tar with Aria The Critical Lesbian

JOIN OUR PATREON https://www.patreon.com/ivebeenmeaningtowatch

In this episode, we have invited Aria Velz, a TikToker who loves and enjoys lesbian and queer media, movies, and other media forms. Today, Manika and Aria talk about the phenomenal 2022 movie Tar, which starred Cate Blanchett as Lydia Tár. But beforehand, they would discuss their most awaited shows and movies this year, like Barbie, The Color Purple, Wicked, and Bridgerton. Stay tuned!

Can’t Wait to Watch: Barbie

[1:35]

Manika is so eager to watch the movie, Barbie. People are so hyped about this movie with its frequent trailer releases and press tours. She didn't know what to expect and what will happen; thus, she was very excited about the outcome of the whole movie.

[5:50]

Like everyone else, when Aria discovered that Greta Gerwig would be the director and Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling were casting it, she couldn’t help but be excited. Aria is also intrigued about how the upcoming Barbie movie will imply some kind of investigation into what the brand means.

Can’t Wait to Watch: The Color Purple

[16:00]

The Color Purple musical is one of Aria’s highly anticipated movies of the year because of how the main characters portrayed their love.

Other Movies

[17:14]

Wicked Movie, Bridgerton, and Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse are some of the other movies on Manika’s list.

Marvel’s Writer Strike

[21:59]

Marvel’s latest movie, Thunderbolts, is delayed because of the writer’s strike. That’s why Manika advises people to watch 30 other Marvel movies on the streaming platforms to be prepared and know all the details connected to Thunderbolts. She also added that people should be mad at the studios, not the writers because they just want to get paid for their work.

The Phenomenal 2022 Movie “Tár”

[29:37]

It's a film about Lydia Tara, a renowned conductor and the first female chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic. She has a personal assistant Francesca, who she relies deeply on, and her wife and concertmaster, Sharon. Manika describes Lydia Tar as a controversial figure and says that feminism is great, but when it comes to gender identity, it becomes different.

[32:58]

Aria sees two major themes from the scenes in the trailer: The first one raised the question about what it means to separate the art from the artist. The second is about what power does to people in the way that power makes you act.

Various Interpretations

[40:09]

Aria examines the scenes in the trailer from two different perspectives. One is about how it communicates the reality that art deserves its appreciation apart from the artist and how vital it is to elevate oneself as the artist. On the other side, it may be interpreted as Lydia Tar being so full of shit that she's simply saying odd stuff to own these woke teens while saying nothing meaningful.

Lydia Tar as an Anti-Hero

[46:21]

Lydia Tar is fascinating as an anti-hero because of her ability to never see the connection between personal actions and art, to be self-serving, always looking out for herself and her activities. And how she doesn’t know the repercussions of her actions until they hit her.

Tar in a Different Format

[53:57]

If Lydia Tar is not a lesbian and woman but instead a straight man, in Manika’s perspective, it would be a little different. People are more anxious when women are in leadership positions and want to make decisions they don't like or agree with. On the other hand, men in leadership roles are perceived as more natural, and whenever they make a recommendation that goes against the norm, people are willing to approve or try it.

[59:19]

From Aria’s perspective, the movie would be much more contrived if it were a male conductor. She thought that if Tar were about a male conductor doing all these things, the question would be, do we need another movie about abuse of power and how men with power can be terrible?

In this episode, Monica is joined by Sean. He is a math teacher and movie enthusiast who runs the “Math Teacher Movies” Instagram page. Through his page, Sean reviews and analyzes both old and new films. Additionally, he co-hosts the “Guy at the Movies” podcast with Joe, where they discuss the latest movie news and releases in a fun and engaging way. Today, Monica and Sean will discuss upcoming films that will be released in theatres soon and the current state of film, TV, and other media. Stay tuned!

Fan Anticipation and Movie Review Aggregator Sites

[2:04]

Monica is excited for Haley Bailey, who stars in the upcoming movie “The Little Mermaid” and “The Color Purple”. She doesn’t care about the Rotten Tomatoes ratings. She has been a diehard fan of Haley Bailey and her sister since their YouTube channel and radio contest.

[3:21]

Sean agrees that Rotten Tomatoes shouldn’t be used as a Bible for film ratings but as a tool. He’s encouraged by “The Little Mermaid” reviews, as they’re better than expected, hovering between the high 60s and low 70s. He likes Haley’s spin on the music and is willing to give the movie a chance, as the live-action remakes can bring something new to the table, like “The Jungle Book.”

Pros and Cons of Live-Action Remakes

[7:16]

Monica expresses her ambivalence towards Disney’s live-action remakes, citing the Dumbo remake by Tim Burton as an example of how a director may not be able to tell the full story they want to due to Disney’s creative control. Although she tries to keep an open mind, she can’t help but be reminded of the Dumbo remake and how it fell short of expectations.

The Transient Nature of Television

[14:23]

Sean discusses the common take that there’s too much TV now, leading to shows being a “flash in the pan” and disappearing quickly. However, he’s excited that one of these shows, “The Bear,” is returning for a second season.

[14:52]

Monica loves the show because it’s so good and relatable, painting a realistic picture of the stress and challenges of working in food service. The characters and their dynamic resonate with her experiences, making it a captivating and intense viewing experience.

Remembering the Legendary Tina Turner

[17:26]

Monica shares the sad news of Tina Turner’s passing at 83, a rock legend known as the Queen of Rock n’ Roll. Monica highlights Turner’s illustrious career and numerous accolades, noting how she inspired many throughout her life.

Independent Films and Upcoming Releases

[25:52]

Monica shares her excitement for the upcoming release of “Into the Spider-Verse” and “Elemental” and encourages others to support original films. She implores people to watch “Blackened Egg” when it’s released in theatres, as she is excited about that movie. The Guy At The Movies podcast https://open.spotify.com/show/042ufP2Fp8q0Eo0CQPV80e
